Design Approach
Our Adirondack chair plans begin with the historical design, adapted to satisfy 3 important goals:
Comfortable:
Seat curvature is critical to how an Adirondack chair feels. You could throw a cushion on any outdoor chair, but ... design quality is found in a seat curvature which is good without a cushion - one which conforms to the body while also not being too bucketed. Our back curvatures are designed to conform to your body while allowing for plenty of movement as you sit. Also, these chair plans are designed to be universally comfortable, not only for people of average height and weight.
Beautiful: An Adirondack chair must be beautiful; otherwise, why not just put a couple of plastic chairs out. Adirondack chairs on the porch make a statement of relaxation to the world passing by, and a display of your woodworking hobby. A good design will offer years worth of satisfaction whether you are sitting in the chairs or simply looking at them. Our patterns are carefully designed to be visually aesthetic, so follow the patterns closely for the best outcome.
Durable: By calling for use of thick wood and by using notched front 3 x 3 legs, our chair designs have tested to hold a substantial amount of weight without breaking. Durable by design, their strength also depends on lumber grade and grain.
Easy & Convenient to Build: The lumber mainly used in the chair designs, 5/4" x 6" select Western Red Cedar - a material commonly available at lumber/hardware stores as outdoor deck-building material. For long life we recommend applying deck sealer once per year.
